The prevalence of methamphetamine and crystal meth in South Dakota among the younger population of the state has certainly let substance abuse experts thinking. The primary users of these substances are aged between 18 and 25 years. This trend is quite harmful, because if a person begins a meth or crystal meth usage early on in life, there are greater chances that they will be in a full-fledged addiction later on, and their treatment will become only that much more difficult.
In order to understand why these substances are so widely accepted by the youth, it would be interesting to first know the manner in which they work. Methamphetamine is an amphetamine drug. When consumed, it has a quick release action in the brain for dopamine. Now, dopamine is the hormone that is related with our sensation of pleasure. Hence, as soon as methamphetamine is consumed, the person gets a surge of a pleasurable feeling. Crystal meth is a purer derivative of methamphetamine and hence it has a more pronounced effect on the brain.
It is mostly due to the pleasure caused that has heightened the popularity of crystal meth and methamphetamine in South Dakota among the youth. Young people like quick euphoria and that’s what this drug provides. Also contributing to the effect is the aphrodisiacal feeling that the substance can produce.
There is a practical reason also. Most of the methamphetamine addiction in South Dakota is concentrated among youth groups because the meth labs that produce this substance transfer it locally in the places where youth frequent, such as the nightclubs and the discos. Due to ready availability, the drug has definitely become quite popular with the youngsters.
