There are many treatment methods available to help someone who has a prescription drug addiction to OxyContin. This medication is in the same category of drugs as heroin, which is referred to as opioids. They are chemically similar and have many of the same effects on individuals who abuse them. Because of this, addiction treatment for heroin and OxyContin tends to be the same.

The first step is usually drug detox. This is when the patient stops taking the drug and experiences withdrawal from it. The majority of the substance leaves the body within a week, and when this is done cravings lessen and recovery becomes somewhat easier.

However, detox is only the first step in overcoming an addiction to OxyContin. Further treatment is necessary to avoid relapse. People with a severe problem will need to get help from a residential rehab center, though it may be possible for some to overcome the addiction with an outpatient treatment program. Programs which last a minimum of three months are the most effective. A variety of methods, such as counseling, support groups, and education about the nature of prescription drug addiction is needed to avoid relapse.

Methadone is another method that is frequently used in addiction treatment for opioid drugs. It is an opiate itself, but it is safer and has fewer side effects. The patient begins taking methadone in place of OxyContin, and it eliminates cravings and withdrawal symptoms. If the addict tries to use OxyContin while on the new drug, they will not feel the effects of it. The patient is then dependent on methadone, and can decide whether to detox from it or continue taking it long term. Again, using other forms of treatment like counseling in addition to methadone is the preferred method for long-term success after experiencing drug addiction.
