Methamphetamine Addiction and Other Substance Abuse in Kansas on the Decline
May 17, 2008
Kansas has become the first state to implement programs like the Strengthening Families Program on a statewide scale in order to battle against the growing methamphetamine addiction and other forms of substance abuse in the state. This program is specially designed to help families cope with substance abuse in Kansas, with special attention to the methamphetamine problem. The program has been developed under the guidelines of the two major drug and substance abuse organizations in America, the National Institute of Drug Abuse, NIDA, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, SAMHSA. This program for fighting against substance abuse in Kansas has been implemented in the state since the March of 2008.
The Strengthening Families Program is expected to work in two areas. The first area is to provide intensive counseling to families that have children placed in outside placement such as foster care to deal with parenting issues and to train them on issues like living skills for the parents and their children. This is directly targeted at equipping both the families and the children with the knowledge required to prevent a substance abuse. In other premise of functioning, the program will delve on counseling the adolescents of ages 15 years and above to understand and learn independent living skills. As the counseling progresses, it will incorporate several kinds of methods on how substance abuse can be prevented.
This is a major step for preventing all kinds of drug addiction, notable methamphetamine addiction in Kansas. Many other states are following suit, inspired by the success of the program.
