There is a little voice inside of everyone that helps them determine the difference between what is right or wrong. You may call it your conscience, intuition, a higher power, or the devil and angel on your shoulders. This sense of right and wrong does not disappear from your being when you develop a drug addiction or alcoholism.

The disease causes you to stop listening to it for a while. Over time, you begin doing more and more things that are against the will of your intuition. However, it is still there, even when you are not paying attention to it. One of parts of being successful in a drug rehab program is letting this little voice assert itself again. You can regain the ability to hear and listen to your own sense of determining what is right and what is wrong. In fact, everyone who is successful in addiction recovery does this. The first step to listening to your conscience is to go through a period of detox. With drugs and alcohol in your system, the effects of these substances on your brain force you to listen to them. It is the nature of addiction that substance abuse has a powerful influence on your actions.

After the detox process, you need to be in a secure and structured environment where you will feel safe enough to hear your intuition. Rehab centers can provide this for you. You need to be able to recognize that nothing terrible will happen to you if you stop behaving in a destructive manner and lying. In fact, it will change your life for the better. Your intuition will be able to guide you along the path of determining right from wrong regarding substance abuse, as well as determining what direction you want your future to take.
