Buprenorphine, much better known as Zyban or Wellbutrin, is a very important medicine that is used in the treatment of heroin addiction. Why does buprenorphine fit into a heroin treatment program? One of the main reasons is that buprenorphine is and antidepressant. This drug makes you lose your depressing thoughts that usually accompany a cessation of heroin usage. This helps the person to come out of the withdrawal in a much better manner. Today, this drug buprenorphine along with methadone, form the most important antibiotics that are used in the heroin addiction treatment program.
The effects of buprenorphine are actually very effectively felt on all opiate drugs like heroin is. These drugs are known to cause the highest levels of addiction and are the most difficult drugs to treat for addiction because of their very strong withdrawal symptoms. But addressing the problem of withdrawal symptoms and making them much more bearable in the addict, buprenorphine makes a very good choice as a drug for the treatment of opiate addictions such as heroin.
Buprenorphine itself does not cause any addiction. This is a severe problem with several opiate medications because the drugs have to associate themselves with the body in the same manner as the opiates do. Because buprenorphine does not bind itself to the body, there is no question of a secondary addiction caused due to it. It does not carry the risks of overdose and physical dependency. A buprenorphine treatment can be carried out at the home of the patient too, especially if the heroin addiction is not running for a very long time in the person.
