1. The number of people who die due to alcohol or drug addiction in Illinois and related problems is between 9,000 and 10,000. The breakup is 40% people for alcohol addiction related deaths and 60% people for drug addiction related deaths.
2. 5% of all the deaths that occur in Illinois are due to alcohol addiction directly, or through its related problems.
3. This heavy figure also takes a toll on the overall economy of the state. People who are under addictions will either be fired from the job, or they will perform poorly. In addition, they will need an expense for their treatment and rehabilitation. The average amount of money that is spent per year on alcohol and drug addiction treatment in Illinois, plus the economic wastage mounts to over $3.5 billion.
4. People in Illinois are using more alcohol now than ever before. In fact, there are more people who are compulsively drinking alcohol on a regular and daily basis than there were in the previous years. These people are also becoming immune to medication and developing health problems, which is causing a two pronged attack on their health.
5. The total number of people who seek admissions in drug and alcohol rehab in Illinois each year is between 80,000 and 85,000. Out of this, approximately 15,000 is the number of people who seek admissions solely for alcohol addiction.
