Drug Treatment Courts to eliminate Adolescent Drug Abuse in Maine

May 28, 2008

Maine has a very elaborate drug treatment program for adolescents in the form of juvenile drug treatment courts. These drug treatment courts are targeted at the teenage groups who are into substance abuse in Maine and have been booked under various criminal acts that were committed under the influence of some addictive substance.

Right now there are about 80 adolescents who are being treated in such centers for addiction treatment in Maine. These drug treatment courts service the state from six locations within the state, the last and the most recent one being established at Lewiston in the year 2002.

The main intention of the drug court rehab program in Maine is to make these youthful citizens understand the extent of the crimes they committed under influence of a controlling substance and to make them understand that treatment for such a situation is indeed possible. The main point emphasized is that they can make their lives better by accepting the treatment and following it through. Most of the juveniles who are within these programs find the benefits within a few months of the treatment. Since these correctional facilities work much like the residential drug rehabs in Maine, they allow the juveniles to live in a community-like setting with other individuals battling the same kinds of problems that they do. It allows then to reenter society meaningfully when they are fully recovered, though they may have to continue treatment in a regular fashion even after being discharged from the program.

You can seek more information on these programs from the Juvenile Substance Abuse Treatment Network and the Office of Substance Abuse of Maine. You will find other programs for such addiction treatment programs with the Family Drug Court in the Androscoggin and Lincoln Counties and a Co-Occurring Court in Kennebec County.
