Drug Addiction Intervention Today
April 29, 2008
Just as everything else in the drug treatment program, the field of drug abuse intervention is also changing rapidly. Until the last decade, intervention was all about bringing a patient into the drug rehab and then their work was mostly over. But today, the role of the interventionist during the treatment and after the treatment is much more important than their contribution in making the patient overcome denial and seek appropriate drug addiction treatment.
Indeed, the counseling part has become more important, because this is where the patient really needs able support. Long term drug addicts find the withdrawal process quite intimidating, and in fact, this could be one of the reasons why they do not agree to get enrolled in a treatment procedure at the outset. But, the interventionists help them to cope through this period.
They will also help the patient to return home and get readjusted to those surroundings after the treatment is over. They may stay with the patient for some time till this happens. During this period, they will teach the patient holistic methods that go a long way in curbing any urges for the substance. A very important thing that they will do is to train the family in ways and means to take care of the patient and always monitor his or her habits.
Statistics by an independent body known as the National Association of Independent Interventionists reveal that 90% of the people who enroll into a drug treatment program have come in through the intercession of an intervention program. These people include a lot of those who would not have partaken of any treatment had they not been properly coached by an interventionist. Some of the reputed interventionists have a success rate of as high as 98% with their treatment and counseling methods.
