Drug Addiction in the Least Expected Places-Prescription and Nonprescription

May 2, 2008

If you were under the impression that all drug addiction victims have to go to shady places sneakily to use their drug, you are sorely mistaken. In fact, a large share of substance abuse can happen in places where you least expect. Verily speaking, there may be some substance that can be abused for recreation in your own home.

Statistics are alarmingly bringing the fact alive to us that more and more children around the world are getting into substance abuse because they are discovering substances that they can abuse within their own homes.

Some of the most common substances that can be abused at home are the medications you may be using to treat your health problems. There are drug abuse culprits among both prescription as well as nonprescription medications. One good example is any fentanyl-containing medication that is prescribed by the doctor as an analgesic. What most people don’t know is that fentanyl acts very similarly to an opiate within the human body. If a person is using fentanyl without any pain in his or her body, then it can produce a high similar to what morphine produces.

Another example is dextromethorpan which is a common ingredient in cold medicines. This also gives the high that most drugs are known to give. Both fentanyl and dextromethorpan are habit-forming substances. And so are most of the inhalants found around the house.

These substances may not be very dangerous health-wise, but they may be the harbingers of more lethal addictions in future. Next time when the doctor prescribes any medicine to you or even if you are getting it over the counter, make sure you ask if it is habit forming. If it is, it is your responsibility to keep it as far away from children as you can.
