When someone is doing something they know that they should not be doing many emotions can wash over the person.  Feelings of guilt and being ashamed are very common.  This leads to even more substance abuse

By the time a person needs to ask for help it may be too late to turn to family and friends.  There are substance abuse resources for people who are serious about cleaning up their lives. Many churches are now offering drug rehab programs and detox clinics for those people living on the streets.  There are counseling sessions for people suffering from alcohol addiction and drug addiction.  Some of the churches list these services under public service or social service headings in the telephone directory.

There are private and non profit organizations such as the Salvation Army which also offer rehab programs to people who suffer from substance abuse.  Many times these free drug treatment centers offer medical treatment along with mental and emotional counseling.

Alcoholism treatment programs such as AA are free for anyone who wishes to go to a meeting.  Being with others who suffer from the same affliction can help during a time of hopelessness.  These treatment programs offer mentors and buddies to help through tough times when nothing but another drink seems to be the answer.

The continuing support system these free or income based treatment programs offer is phenomenal.  People who suffer with substance abuse have many resources available.  Hospitals and doctor’s offices usually have a list of resources for someone who wants to obtain help.

These treatment programs offer the ability to ask questions about the drug treatments being offered.  A counselor will sit down and talk about the needs of the client to best determine a course of action.  Sometimes this is all it takes to be on the road to recovery.
