An Aspect of Drug Abuse that Needs Immediate Attention-Drug Addiction in Women

April 28, 2008

Women are biologically and psychologically different from men. Hence, it is no wonder that drug addiction should have different effects in men and in women.

When women get hooked onto drugs, they have to pay a much higher price than men have to. In a company where women are having drugs with men, there is a very high chance that an incident of sexual abuse might occur. While the woman will not be too aware of what’s going on at that moment (especially if the drug being used is the sexual-high inducing drug, methamphetamine), the repercussions that become evident later on could be really demanding on the woman. Among other things, such sexual promiscuity could bring on infections, including AIDS, which makes the whole issue scarier.

Women need to be more particular about substance abuse due to potentialities of pregnancy. When women are pregnant, whatever they take inside the body enters into the body of the fetus too. Even drugs are included in this. That means, women have the capacity to make someone a drug addict even before they are born. A pregnant woman who continues drugs will have to face the risk of a stillborn child, premature delivery and preterm labor. Lactating mothers who continue drugs could create physical abnormalities in their own children.

It is very important that the drug addiction treatment organizations of the world come together and specifically address the problem of drug abuse in women. These women are probably giving birth to an incapacitated generation. It is time we addressed this issue with all the seriousness it deserves.
