An Alcohol Rehab is not Just About Alcohol Detox
April 30, 2008
With the large number of cases of alcohol addiction sapping the world’s population, it is no surprise that several alcohol treatment centers, what we better know as alcohol rehabs, have sprung up in recent times. These centers are designed at complete treatment of alcoholic patients, where they may have to stay on an inpatient basis until they are completely cured of the habit.
Alcohol rehab works with various different principles at treating people out of their addiction. Most people think that all that alcohol rehab centers do is detoxification of the person from alcohol. Yes, detox is a very important part of the entire alcohol rehabilitation treatment program, but it is definitely not everything that’s there to it.
Detoxification means the removal of alcohol and its metabolites from the body of the person. This is done by using a continuous medicine therapy and other treatment procedures. The whole alcohol detox will typically last for three days, but in people who have been consuming alcohol for a long time, the detox can go on longer too. This is also the period that is notorious for its withdrawal symptoms. In fact, a large part of the activities of alcohol treatment centers is to make the person face the withdrawal period as comfortably as possible.
But, more than the detox, the function of the alcohol treatment center is to counsel the person on his or her alcohol habits. The main intention is to guide the person towards sober living even after the treatment is over. This becomes the main part of the activities of the rehab.
